Warren Avenue Christian Church stands on a powerful legacy of faith rooted in the deep spiritual heritage of African-American Christians. From the earliest days of slavery, our ancestors held fast to a profound sense of the Sacred worshiping through song, preaching, and celebration. We are honored to be a part of this rich spiritual tradition.
In the late 1870s, white missionaries and African-American Christians worshipped together in Dallas until the formation of Central Christian Church. Soon after, the first Black Disciples congregation was established at Akard & Jackson, later moving to Young Street. Rev. Henry S. Howell became its first minister in 1887, laying the foundation for Christian education and outreach.
As the church expanded, it moved to Preston & Paris Streets, becoming Preston Street Christian Church. Continued growth led to several transitions including a split that formed Romine Avenue Christian Church and eventually a move to Thomas Avenue, then Boll Street.
By the 1940s, under Rev. Paul A. Sims and Rev. M.C. Dickson, the congregation relocated to Forest Avenue. However, in 1970, the building was demolished to make way for I-45.
In 1972, after merging with South Third Street Christian Church, the newly formed Warren Avenue Christian Church held its first service at a new building on Warren Avenue. The church was dedicated that same year, and by 1979, the mortgage was paid in full.
Rev. M.C. Dickson led the church for over 48 years before retiring in 1993. He was succeeded by Rev. Lloyd Facen, a passionate community leader who fostered racial reconciliation and mentored future pastors. He served faithfully until his passing in 2010.
In 2012, the church called Dr. Irie Lynne Session as its first female Senior Pastor in 142 years. Under her leadership, the church adopted its cultural brand: “The AVENUE” reflecting a ministry that meets people where they are, just as Jesus did.
Warren Avenue Christian Church continues to serve with a spirit of love, justice, and transformation. Grounded in a powerful past, we are moving faithfully into the future.
"Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." - Philippians 1:6
